Elihu N. Root, M.D. Distinguished Lectureship
In 2009, the Kelsey Research Foundation created the Dr. Elihu N. Root Distinguished Lectureship, an annual series of lectures featuring prominent leaders in the fields of bioethics and oncology. For almost four decades, Dr. Elihu Root was a distinguished member of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and for many years served as Chief of the Hematology/Oncology Department. His specialty was the treatment of breast and colorectal cancers, as well as the early detection of cancer. Through the Kelsey Research Foundation, he served as principal investigator on major clinical research studies for the treatment of breast and colorectal cancer and was a dedicated member of the Kelsey-Seybold Cancer Committee. His devotion to bioethics and the Kelsey-Seybold tradition of excellence in oncology earned him a place of honor in his field and the admiration of both staff and patients. Dr. Root was a remarkable man who was outstanding in his profession and compassionate and caring to all whose lives he touched. His generous spirit continues to inspire all of us at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and the Kelsey Research Foundation.
"Dr. Root was one of the finest doctors
Kelsey-Seybold or St. Luke's Hospital ever had. His steadfastness
of character and achievement stood out like the Rock of
-Mavis P. Kelsey, M.D.
On October 27, 2014, the Foundation hosted the fifth annual Elihu N. Root, M.D. Distinguished Lectureship in the Denton A. Cooley Building Auditorium at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. We were honored to welcome Larry C. Driver, M.D., who presented "Ethical Challenges and Decision-Making in Pain and Palliative Care."
